What is Carbon Steel Sheet?

Carbon steel sheets are thin, flat-rolled steel products with a thickness typically ranging from 0.5mm to 6mm, distinguishing them from steel plates (above 6mm). They are among the most versatile steel products, serving as raw material for stamping, bending, laser cutting, welding, and surface treatment processes. Huaxia Steel is a leading supplier of carbon steel sheets in hot-rolled, cold-rolled, and galvanized finishes, conforming to ASTM A36, A1008, JIS G3141, EN 10130, and GB/T standards.

Manufacturing Process

Carbon steel sheets are produced through the following process chain:

Hot Rolling: Steel slabs are heated to 1100–1250°C and rolled into sheets 1.5–6mm thick. The resulting product has a dark oxide surface and relatively wide tolerances, cost-effective for structural and non-critical applications.

Cold Rolling: Pickled hot-rolled sheets are further reduced at room temperature through precision rolling mills. Cold-rolled sheets achieve tight thickness control (±0.02mm), excellent surface quality, and improved mechanical properties—the preferred choice for exposed automotive components and precision stamping.

Galvanizing (Optional): Cold-rolled sheets can be hot-dip galvanized (GI) or galvannealed (GA) with a zinc coating (40–275 g/m²) for corrosion protection.

Surface Finish & Treatment Options

Available surface finishes:
Hot Rolled (HR): Dark blue-grey oxide surface, mill finish
Hot Rolled, Pickled & Oiled (HRPO): Scale removed, light oiled for rust prevention
Cold Rolled (CR): Bright, smooth, scale-free surface
Galvanized (GI): Zinc-coated (Z40–Z275) for outdoor/corrosive environments
Galvannealed (GA): Zinc-iron alloy coating for superior paint adhesion
Electro-galvanized (EG): Uniform zinc coating for precision applications

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between carbon steel sheet and carbon steel plate?

The distinction is primarily by thickness. Steel sheets range from 0.15mm to 6mm, while steel plates start at 6mm and go up to 200mm+. Sheets are typically supplied in flat cut pieces or from coil (CTL), while plates are usually supplied as discrete flat pieces. Sheets are preferred for stamping and bending; plates for structural and load-bearing applications.

What does ‘mild steel sheet’ mean?

‘Mild steel’ refers to low-carbon steel with carbon content below 0.25% (typically 0.05–0.20%). Mild steel sheets are the most common type of carbon steel sheet, offering excellent weldability, formability, and machinability at an affordable price. Grades like A36, Q235, and S235JR are all classified as mild steel.

Can you cut carbon steel sheets to custom sizes?

Yes. Huaxia Steel provides precision cut-to-length (CTL) services. We can shear sheets to any dimension within our range with tolerance of ±2mm for length and ±1mm for width. Laser cutting and waterjet cutting are also available for complex shapes.

What is the standard sheet size?

Common standard sizes include: 4×8ft (1220×2440mm), 5×10ft (1524×3048mm), 6×12ft (1829×3658mm), and 2×4ft (610×1219mm). Custom dimensions are readily available.

Is carbon steel sheet magnetic?

Yes, all carbon steel sheets are ferromagnetic and will respond to magnets. The magnetic permeability of low-carbon steel is very high, making it suitable for magnetic shielding and electromagnetic applications.
