ASTM A671 CC65 is an electric-fusion-welded (EFW) carbon steel pipe made from plate, designed for atmospheric and lower-temperature pressure service. The “CC65” designation indicates Class CC (electric-fusion-welded, radiographed) with a 65 ksi (450 MPa) tensile strength grade plate. A671 pipe is widely used in power plant, refinery, and industrial piping systems where large-diameter welded pipe with full weld seam inspection is required.

Class Designations (Weld Seam Examination)

ASTM A671 defines weld seam examination classes. Higher class numbers require more stringent NDE:

CC65 is most commonly supplied in Class 12 or Class 22, depending on the service requirements. For ASME B31.1 power piping, Class 12 or higher is typically required.

What is the difference between ASTM A671 and A672?

ASTM A671 is for atmospheric and lower-temperature service, made from pressure vessel quality plate (A516). ASTM A672 is for moderate-temperature service, also made from pressure vessel plate but with different grade options. Both are EFW pipe, but the temperature service and plate grade differ.

What does CC65 mean?

“CC” indicates electric-fusion-welded with the weld seam examined (Class CC). “65” indicates the plate has a minimum tensile strength of 65 ksi (450 MPa). The full designation is ASTM A671 Grade CC65.

Can A671 CC65 pipe be used for high-temperature service?

No. A671 is designed for atmospheric and lower-temperature service. For high-temperature service (above 400 degrees C), use ASTM A672, A691, or seamless pipe per ASTM A335 (alloy steel) or A106 (carbon steel).
