ASTM A6 vs EN 10029 Plate Dimensional Tolerance Standards Compared

Two standards quietly control most of the world’s structural plate trade: ASTM A6/A6M in North America and EN 10029 in Europe. They look similar at a glance but use different tolerance bands, different definitions of nominal thickness, and different flatness rules. If your project specification calls out one without realizing the other is also being offered by the mill, you can end up with off-tolerance plate that adds welding rework and inspection time.

This guide compares ASTM A6 vs EN 10029 plate dimensional tolerance standards so importers can write unambiguous RFQs and quality control plans when sourcing from China.

1. What Each Standard Covers

Both standards assume the plate is supplied from the rolling mill or processed by shearing, flame cutting, or plasma cutting.

2. Thickness Tolerance Comparison

Nominal thickness ASTM A6 (plus/minus) EN 10029 Class A EN 10029 Class B EN 10029 Class C
5 mm 0.35 mm 0.80 mm 0.50 mm 0.40 mm
10 mm 0.36 mm 0.80 mm 0.50 mm 0.40 mm
15 mm 0.42 mm 0.80 mm 0.60 mm 0.50 mm
20 mm 0.50 mm 0.80 mm 0.70 mm 0.60 mm
25 mm 0.60 mm 1.00 mm 0.80 mm 0.70 mm
40 mm 0.80 mm 1.20 mm 1.00 mm 0.80 mm
80 mm 1.40 mm 1.60 mm 1.40 mm 1.20 mm

ASTM A6 tolerates thinner plates to tighter bands, especially below 20 mm. EN 10029 gives the buyer three classes; “Class A” is the loosest and is usually the cheapest, “Class C” rivals ASTM A6.

3. Width and Length Tolerances

Dimension ASTM A6 EN 10029
Width (mill edge) +25 mm, -0 mm (typical) +20 mm, -0 mm
Width (cut edge) +6 mm, -6 mm +0 mm, -0 mm (with +10 mm trim)
Length +25 mm, -0 mm (typical) +20 mm, -0 mm
Length tolerance on request +0 mm, -0 mm (cut to length) +5 mm, -0 mm

EN 10029 generally allows a slightly tighter cut-edge width because it expects the mill to trim both sides after rolling. ASTM A6 relies on the buyer’s note for “cut edges.”

4. Flatness and Camber

Standard Flatness tolerance Camber tolerance
ASTM A6 (plates) Length/180 over 1.5 m span (typical) 25 mm in 10 m, or per agreement
EN 10029 Class A Smaller of 5 mm over 1 m or 15 mm over 3 m 0.2% of length (about 20 mm per 10 m)
EN 10029 Class B Smaller of 4 mm over 1 m or 12 mm over 3 m 0.1% of length
EN 10029 Class C Smaller of 3 mm over 1 m or 9 mm over 3 m 0.1% of length

Flatness is one of the most common points of dispute. A 12 m plate with even a 1% deviation over 1 m can be 120 mm out of plane – enough to require press leveling before fabrication.

5. Mass Tolerance

ASTM A6 allows a mass tolerance of +/- 3% for a given plate order. EN 10029 sets a tighter default of +/- 2.5% on nominal dimensions. Buyers shipping by theoretical weight should clarify which default the mill will use, and whether the invoice will be on actual weighed or theoretical mass.

6. How to Specify in an RFQ

To avoid dispute, write your inquiry along the following lines:

7. Which Standard Wins for Chinese Mills?

Most large Chinese mills roll plate to both standards. Production lines are calibrated against EN 10029 because many of their customers are in Europe. For ASTM A6, the mill simply declares compliance on the MTC. If you need guaranteed ASTM A6 thickness tolerance, ask for a sample measurement certificate and consider a third-party check.

FAQ

Is EN 10029 Class B the same as ASTM A6?

Close but not identical. Class B is tighter on thickness and flatness; ASTM A6 is tighter on thinner plates. For most projects, they are interchangeable.

Do I need to specify both standards?

Usually no. Pick one and ask the mill to confirm compliance. Dual certification is possible but adds paperwork.

Which standard is stricter on flatness?

EN 10029 Class C. Class A is the loosest. ASTM A6 lies between Class B and C for plates thicker than 25 mm.

What about ultrasonic testing tolerances?

Covered separately under ASTM A578 or EN 10160. Tolerance tables are different and should be cited alongside the dimensional standard.

Conclusion

ASTM A6 vs EN 10029 plate dimensional tolerance standards are functionally close but not identical. The most important step is to declare one of them explicitly in your RFQ, with class (for EN) and acceptable measurement points. Combining the mill’s standard compliance report with SGS or BV dimensional spot-checks is the cleanest way to avoid off-tolerance plate.
