Carbon Steel Equal Cross – Butt-Weld Cross | ASME B16.9 | Factory Direct | Huaxia-Steel
Carbon steel equal cross is a four-way butt-weld pipe fitting that connects four pipes of the same nominal diameter at a single intersection, forming a “+” shape. It is the most efficient method of splitting or combining flow in a piping run, typically used where a header branches into two equal-direction take-offs, or where two branches merge into the main.
Huaxia-Steel supplies factory-direct ASME B16.9 carbon steel equal crosses in sizes NPS 1/2 to NPS 48, in standard wall (SCH 40) and extra strong (SCH 80) plus XS and XXS for high-pressure service. Material grades include ASTM A234 WPB and WPC for standard temperature service, and WPHY-42 / WPHY-52 / WPHY-60 / WPHY-65 for high-yield transmission.
1. What is a Carbon Steel Equal Cross?
An equal cross (sometimes called a four-way tee or simply cross) is a butt-weld fitting with four openings of identical bore at 90 degrees to each other. The four ports are typically the same nominal pipe size (NPS), although reducing crosses (with one smaller branch) are also available.
Equal crosses are used to:
- Split flow into two equal legs from a header
- Combine two source lines into a single header
- Distribute flow from a manifold
- Connect branch lines that intersect a main loop without using two tees and an extra weld
Compared to two ASME B16.9 tees at the same location, a single equal cross reduces one weld joint, eliminates one fitting in inventory, and streamlines fabrication. The penalty is that crosses retain more fluid in a dead leg when flow is shut off in one branch, so they are less common in clean-in-place and hygienic lines.
2. Size and Wall Thickness Range
| Size (NPS) | Outside Diameter (mm) | Center-to-End (mm) | Wall (SCH 40 / SCH 80 / XXS) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1/2″ | 21.3 | 25 | 2.77 / 3.73 / – |

| 48″ | 1219.2 | 864 | 9.53 / 12.70 / – |
Standard production covers NPS 1/2 to NPS 24 from inventory. NPS 26 to NPS 48 are made to order with 25-35 day lead time. For sizes above NPS 48, crosses are fabricated from formed plate sections and supplied with full documentation.
3. Material Grades
| ASTM Grade | Yield (min MPa) | Tensile (MPa) | Service |
|---|---|---|---|
| A234 WPB | 240 | 415-585 | Standard service, ambient and high temperature |
| A234 WPC | 280 | 485-655 | Slightly higher strength than WPB |
| A234 WPHY-42 | 290 | 415-585 | Transmission piping, low temperature service |
| A234 WPHY-52 | 360 | 455-620 | Transmission piping |
| A234 WPHY-60 | 415 | 515-690 | High yield transmission piping |
| A234 WPHY-65 | 450 | 530-700 | High yield transmission piping |
| A420 WPL6 | 240 | 415-585 | Low temperature down to -46 °C |
| A420 WPL9 | 315 | 435-620 | Low temperature down to -101 °C (LNG) |
| A860 WPHY 70 | 485 | 565-740 | High yield for sour service |
WPB and WPC grades are normalized. WPHY grades are normalized and supplied with full traceability per ASME B16.9. For sour service (NACE MR0175), grades are restricted to hardness HRC 22 maximum and tested for hardness at four locations.
4. Manufacturing Process
ASME B16.9 equal crosses are produced by one of three methods depending on size and quantity:
- Hot forming (most common): A cylindrical billet is heated to 1,150-1,250 °C, pierced to make a rough cross shape by extrusion or upset forging, then re-heated and pushed through a cross die to form the final shape. WPB / WPC / WPHY grades are produced this way. Resulting grain flow is excellent.
- Plate fabrication: For sizes above NPS 24 or for low-volume orders, the cross is fabricated from four formed plate segments butt-welded together. Plate must meet the same mechanical and chemistry requirements as the seamless or ERW pipe of the same wall. ASME B16.9 allows plate fabrication as long as the welds are 100 percent radio-graphed and the final fitting is stress-relieved.
- Casting (legacy): A216 WCB cast crosses are still used in low-temperature / low-pressure water service. They do not meet A234 mechanical properties and are not interchangeable with WPB.
All crosses are stress-relief heat-treated after forming to remove residual stress, then machined to ASME B16.9 dimensions and tolerances.
5. Dimensional Standards and Tolerances
ASME B16.9 sets the dimensional tolerances for equal crosses:
- Outside diameter at ends: +1.6 mm / -0.8 mm for NPS up to 12″; +2.4 mm / -0.8 mm for NPS 14″ to 24″; +3.2 mm / -0.8 mm for NPS above 24″.
- Inside diameter at ends: +1.6 mm / -0.0 mm for all sizes (matches pipe bore).
- Center-to-face dimension: +2.0 mm / -0.0 mm for NPS up to 12″; +3.0 mm / -0.0 mm for NPS 14″ and above.
- Wall thickness: Not less than the minimum ASME B36.10 / B36.19 wall for the corresponding schedule.
- Angularity: +/- 1.0 degree at the four ends.
- Cross-section shape: The shape of the intersection must be such that the bore and wall are continuous with no sharp transition.
Each cross carries a permanent marking with the manufacturer’s name, material grade, ASME B16.9 designation, size, schedule, and heat number.
6. Applications
Equal crosses are used in:
- Manifolds: Distributing and collecting process fluids at the inlet/outlet of reactors, filters, and separators.
- Pump suction and discharge headers: Connecting multiple pumps to a common header.
- Steam and condensate systems: Branching off boiler headers, drip legs, and deaerator piping.
- Cooling water systems: Distributing cooling water to multiple heat exchangers or condensers.
- Compressor stations: Suction and discharge piping for gas transmission.
- Fire protection: Standpipe and sprinkler risers.
- Refinery piping: Crude and product piping between units.
Equal crosses are NOT recommended for:
- Hygienic or clean-in-place lines (CIP can leave residue in the cross intersection).
- Two-phase flow lines where one branch may be intermittently blocked (slugs accumulate in the cross).
- Pressure-relief discharge where a tee is preferred for clean directional flow.
7. Quality Assurance
Each equal cross is supplied with the following QA documentation:
- EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate tracing the chemistry, mechanical properties, heat treatment, and NDE results for the original heat.
- Dimensional inspection report per ASME B16.9 tolerances.
- Hydrostatic test at 1.5 x design pressure for 30 seconds (per ASME B16.9 – destructive test on a sample per lot, then non-destructive sampling on production).
- Visual examination – no surface defects, no cracks, no undercuts.
- Hardness testing (when specified) for NACE service – four locations per cross, HRC 22 max.
- Marking verification – grade, size, schedule, heat number, manufacturer.
- PMI (positive material identification) available on request.
- Third-party inspection by SGS, BV, TUV, or customer-nominated inspector accepted.
8. Packaging and Shipping
- Standard export packing: Each cross wrapped in VCI anti-rust paper, then in bubble film. Multiple crosses packed in plywood crates strapped with steel bands.
- Wood-free export packing: Available for EU, US, AU destinations.
- Marking: Heat number stencilled on each cross and on every crate. Packing list inside a waterproof pouch.
- Container loading: NPS 1/2 to NPS 24 crosses fit 20-ft or 40-ft containers. NPS 26 and above load on flat-rack containers.
Lead time is 15-25 days for stocked sizes and 30-45 days for made-to-order quantities.
