Carbon Steel Hollow Section
Carbon steel hollow sections—square, rectangular, and circular—are structural elements used in building frames, bridges, machinery guards, conveyor systems, and architectural features. Hot-formed hollow sections (EN 10210) offer superior toughness and weldability for primary structural applications, while cold-formed hollow sections (EN 10219) provide cost-effective solutions for secondary structures and general fabrication. Huaxia-Steel supplies S235JR, S275JR, S355JR, Q235B, and Q355B hollow sections with full EN 10204 3.1 traceability.

Manufacturing Process
Hot-formed hollow sections (EN 10210): Produced by forming hot-rolled strip or plate into a circular shape, welding the seam by high-frequency induction (HFI) or submerged arc welding (SAW), then passing the tube through a series of shaping rolls to produce square or rectangular profiles. The sections are formed at temperatures above 850 °C, resulting in uniform grain structure and excellent toughness in the weld zone.
Cold-formed hollow sections (EN 10219): Cold-rolled strip is roll-formed and welded at room temperature, then shaped into final profile. Cold-formed sections have higher strength due to work hardening but slightly reduced toughness compared to hot-formed equivalents. They are cost-effective for non-dynamic applications.
Applications
- Building and construction: Columns, beams, trusses, and bracing in commercial and industrial buildings. S355J2H is the default grade for multi-story steel frames in Europe.
- Bridges and infrastructure: Parapet posts, sign gantries, noise barriers, and temporary works.
- Machinery and equipment: Guard rails, conveyor frames, robot bases, and material handling structures.
- Agricultural: Greenhouse frames, livestock fencing, and grain storage structures.
- Automotive and transport: Trailer chassis, bus body structures, and shipping container corner posts.
- Architectural: Facade supports, canopies, and decorative screens where clean lines and consistent corner radii are desired.
Quality Assurance
- EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate with full chemical and mechanical data.
- 100 % visual inspection for surface defects, weld bead continuity, and geometric accuracy.
- Ultrasonic or Eddy Current testing of the weld seam on request.
- Dimensional inspection: outside dimensions, wall thickness, corner radius, straightness, twist, and length.
- Optional: galvanizing (hot dip per EN ISO 1461), shot blasting, and priming.
- CE marking available for structural hollow sections supplied to the European market.
Packaging and Shipping
- Bundles are strapped with steel bands at 1-meter intervals.
- Ends are protected with plastic caps or wooden blocks to prevent crushing.
- Oiled surface or VCI wrapping for corrosion protection during sea freight.
- Nested loading in containers to maximize cubic utilization; dunnage between layers prevents scratching.
- Clear shipping marks: grade, standard, dimensions, heat number, bundle number, and gross/net weight.
