EH36 Carbon Steel Shipbuilding Plate — Factory Direct Supplier | Huaxia-Steel

EH36 shipbuilding plate is the high-strength hull structural steel specified wherever a vessel’s hull must carry serious load in cold water: larger cargo ships, ice-class tonnage, offshore support vessels and fishing fleets operating in northern latitudes. Certified under classification society rules (ABS, DNV, LR, BV, CCS, KR, NK) with a guaranteed 355 MPa minimum yield and Charpy impact at −40°C, EH36 is the cold-water member of the AH36/DH36/EH36 hull plate family.
We supply EH36 plate from 6 mm to 100 mm thick in widths to 3,500 mm and lengths to 18,000 mm, with class society survey and certification on every delivery. Cut-to-shape nesting, edge beveling, blasting and shop primer are available so plates arrive at your yard ready for the panel line.

Product Overview
EH36 belongs to the family of high-strength hull structural steels graded A36/D36/E36/F36 by impact test temperature: +0°C, −20°C, −40°C and −60°C respectively. The E in EH36 denotes the −40°C Charpy requirement — 34 J longitudinal minimum — which is what qualifies the grade for hull structures exposed to severe cold-water service.
Compared with ordinary-strength hull grades (A, B, D, E with 235 MPa yield), the 36-series delivers 50% more yield strength, allowing thinner hull plating, lighter structures and higher payload. Compared with DH36, the extra cold toughness of EH36 costs modestly more and is specified where the classification society’s rules or the owner’s specification demand it.
Dimensions and Tolerances
| Parameter | Range | Tolerance / Note |
|---|---|---|
| Thickness | 6–100 mm | EN 10029 Class B/C / class society rules |
| Width | up to 3,500 mm | ±10 mm or per drawing |
| Length | up to 18,000 mm | ±25 mm or per drawing |
| Flatness | EN 10029 Class N | Class S on request |
| Edge condition | Mill or cut edge | Bevel prep (I, V, K) available |
| Unit weight | up to 20 t/plate | crane capacity confirm at order |
Cut-to-shape service nests your piece list onto parent plates with optimal yield, flame or plasma cuts the parts with weld-prep bevels, and marks each piece with drawing and heat numbers. Shipyards receive kit-ready parts instead of full plates, cutting their cutting-shop workload and material waste.
Chemical Composition (typical class-society certified heat)
| Element | C | Si | Mn | P | S | Nb/V/Ti total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Range | ≤0.18% | ≤0.50% | 0.90–1.60% | ≤0.035% | ≤0.035% | ≤0.12% |
Carbon equivalent is controlled per class rules — typically CEV ≤0.38% (TMCP) or ≤0.40% (normalized) — keeping the plate weldable with standard hull consumables and procedures. Low-sulfur practice (≤0.008% S) with Ca treatment is available for plates with demanding Z-quality (through-thickness) requirements.
Mechanical Properties
| Property | Requirement | Typical delivered |
|---|---|---|
| Yield strength | ≥355 MPa | 380–430 MPa |
| Tensile strength | 490–620 MPa | 520–580 MPa |
| Elongation A5 | ≥21% | 23–26% |
| Charpy V-notch (−40°C) | ≥34 J longitudinal | 90–180 J |
| Z-quality (Z35) | on request | RA ≥35% |
Delivery conditions include normalized (+N), thermo-mechanically controlled processed (TMCP) and normalized rolled (+NR). TMCP plate delivers the required properties at lower carbon equivalent, improving weldability on thick sections — the standard modern route for hull plating above roughly 20 mm.
Manufacturing Standards and Certification
- Classification society rules: ABS, DNV, LR, BV, CCS, KR, NK — grade EH36 hull structural steel.
- EN 10025-4 S355M/S355ML (TMCP) — nearest land-structural equivalent (not a class certificate).
- GB/T 712 — Chinese ship plate standard, grade E36.
- EN 10204 3.2 — certificates countersigned by the class surveyor where required.
- ISO 8501/ISO 12944 — blasting and shop primer preparation interface.
Each plate carries the class society’s stamp and heat number; the 3.2 certificate lists chemistry, tensile, impact results and the surveyor’s endorsement. Z15/Z25/Z35 through-thickness testing is available for plates destined for highly restrained welded joints.
Applications
- Hull plating for cargo vessels, tankers and container ships in cold-water service.
- Ice-class vessel structures and ice belt plating.
- Offshore support vessels, platform supply vessels and fishing fleet hulls.
- High-stress structural members: strakes, deck plating, sheer strake transitions.
- Offshore structures where class-certified EH36 is called out by the project spec.
Yards working to owner specifications that demand −40°C toughness in plating should confirm the subgrade early in procurement — DH36 and EH36 are not interchangeable once the approved drawing set names one of them.

Quality Assurance
- Class society survey and stamping with 3.2 certification per plate batch.
- Charpy impact testing at −40°C per heat and thickness class, longitudinal and transverse.
- Ultrasonic inspection (EN 10160 S1/E1 or better) available for thick plate.
- Z-quality testing (Z15/Z25/Z35) per EN 10164 on request.
- Dimensional and flatness inspection per EN 10029 with reported results.
- Third-party inspection coordinated with class survey at the mill before shipment.
Packaging and Export Shipping
Plates ship with rust-preventive surface coating (blasted-and-primed plates ship with shop primer), steel-punched labels per plate showing grade, heat, size and class stamp. Cargo is cradled on timber bearings with ISPM 15 compliant dunnage and secured for break-bulk or flat-rack shipment; plate bundles for smaller sizes move in 40 ft open-top containers.
We ship FOB, CFR and DAP to major shipyard ports worldwide. Stock and rolling lead times depend on thickness and class society survey schedule — send your piece list or plate schedule with destination port and we will confirm availability, certification scope and firm price within 24 hours.
AH36 vs DH36 vs EH36: Choosing the Subgrade
| Grade | Impact test temp | Charpy energy (min) | Typical service |
|---|---|---|---|
| AH36 | +0°C | 34 J | General hull structure, mild waters |
| DH36 | −20°C | 34 J | Standard ocean-going hulls |
| EH36 | −40°C | 34 J | Cold-water service, ice-class adjacent |
| FH36 | −60°C | 34 J | Severe cold, Arctic projects |
The subgrade decision is set by the classification society’s rules for the vessel’s service notation and the owner’s specification — not by price. A hull approved for DH36 cannot substitute EH36 freely either: over-specification triggers a drawing revision just as under-specification does. When your approved drawing names EH36, every plate must carry that grade on the class-stamped certificate.
TMCP vs Normalized Delivery for EH36
Both delivery conditions meet the same minimum properties, but they get there differently. Normalized plate relies on conventional chemistry (higher carbon and microalloy content) and furnace treatment; TMCP plate achieves the properties through controlled rolling and cooling, so chemistry — and therefore carbon equivalent — stays lower. For weld-heavy hull construction the lower CEV of TMCP plate means easier preheat management and better HAZ toughness, especially in thicknesses above 20 mm.
The choice interacts with your yard’s weld procedures: a WPS qualified on normalized plate generally transfers to TMCP of the same grade, but the reverse can be limited by the lower chemistry. Confirm which condition your approved procedures assume, and we will match the delivery condition to it.
Cut-to-Shape Nesting and Yard Workflow
Modern yards order nested parts, not random plates. We nest your piece list onto parent plates for optimal yield, flame-cut the parts with bevel preps, and mark every piece with drawing number, heat number and class stamp so the panel line assembles against traceable parts. Nesting typically saves 8–15% of material against random-length ordering and shifts cutting labour from your yard to the mill, where it is cheaper.
The logistics matter too: nested kits pack tighter, and per-piece marking means the yard’s store receives parts sorted by block instead of by plate. For export shipments the kit arrives with the full 3.2 certificate set mapped to heat numbers, so your class surveyor can close material traceability in a single review.
Ordering Workflow and Lead Times
Class-certified plate follows the surveyor’s schedule as well as the mill’s: stock EH36 with current class certification ships quickly, but specific thickness and survey combinations typically run 3–6 weeks to rolling and survey. Send the piece list (or plate schedule) with class society, grade, thickness breakdown, cut-to-shape requirements and destination port; we confirm availability, survey windows and a firm price within 24 hours.
Yards running repeat programs benefit from frame agreements: we hold rolling slots against your vessel schedule and release kits per block, keeping the 3.2 certificate trail continuous across the hull.
Every EH36 plate from Huaxia-Steel carries classification society certification with EN 10204 3.2 documentation, and our cut-to-shape service delivers kit-ready parts mapped to your piece list. Send your plate schedule with class society and destination port — we will confirm survey windows, firm pricing and lead time within 24 hours.
Common EH36 orders from our mill partners include: 8–20 mm TMCP plate for hull shell and deck plating, 20–50 mm normalized plate for thick structural members, and Z35-tested plate for highly restrained joints around strakes and insert plates. Whatever the configuration, the certificate set — class-stamped, 3.2 countersigned, mapped to heat numbers — arrives with the steel, so your survey closes on first presentation.
For yards and traders comparing sources, the questions that sort suppliers fastest are: which class societies approve the producing mill for EH36, can the mill survey to your notified schedule, and can they show a recent EH36 3.2 certificate? Our answers are ready before you ask — approvals, survey availability and sample certificates accompany every quotation we issue for this grade.
