Carbon Steel Threaded Pipe – NPT / BSP Carbon Steel | Factory Direct | Huaxia-Steel

Carbon steel threaded pipe is the workhorse of low-pressure fluid systems – fire protection mains, plumbing risers, natural gas distribution, oil-field water injection, plant air lines and small-bore steam vents. Threads cut into the pipe end allow a screwed joint with a malleable iron or carbon steel coupling, eliminating welding and reducing installation time in the field. Huaxia-Steel supplies factory-direct NPT (American National Taper) and BSP (British Standard Pipe) threaded carbon steel pipe per ASTM A53 Grade A/B Type S (seamless) and Type E (electric-resistance-weld), with threads cut to ASME B1.20.1 (NPT) or ISO 7-1 (BSP). Standard stock is NPS 1/2 to NPS 6 in Schedule 40, Schedule 80 and XS, available in black (mill finish) or hot dip galvanized per ASTM A90. Every shipment carries EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate and hydrostatic test record.

1. Standards Mapping

Parameter ASTM A53 Type S / E ASME B36.10 ASME B1.20.1 (NPT) ISO 7-1 (BSP)
Pipe standard yes dimension
Dimensional standard conforms yes
Thread type NPT (American taper) BSP parallel / taper
Thread angle 60 degrees 55 degrees
Pressure class Sch 40 / 80 / XS Sch 10 to XXS
Coupling standard ASTM A865 (threaded coupling) per ASME B16.11 tapered to ASME B1.20.1 tapered per ISO 7-1
Galvanizing standard ASTM A90 coating weight

The buyer chooses NPT for North American projects and BSP for European, Middle Eastern and South-East Asian projects. Mis-matched threads cause installation delay and leak risk – the order must name the thread standard explicitly.

2. Available Grades and Chemistry

Element (percent) A53 Grade A A53 Grade B (Type S / E)
Carbon (C, max) 0.25 0.30
Manganese (Mn, max) 0.95 1.20
Phosphorus (P, max) 0.05 0.05
Sulfur (S, max) 0.045 0.045
Nickel (Ni, max) 0.40 0.40
Chromium (Cr, max) 0.40 0.40
Copper (Cu, max) 0.40 0.40
Molybdenum (Mo, max) 0.15 0.15
Vanadium (V, max) 0.08 0.08

Grade B is the standard for fire protection, oil-field and gas distribution service. Grade A is used for plumbing, low-pressure air and conduit service where the higher cost of Grade B does not buy extra performance.

3. Mechanical Properties

Property A53 Grade A A53 Grade B
Tensile strength min (MPa / ksi) 330 / 48 415 / 60
Yield strength min (MPa / ksi) 205 / 30 240 / 35

Flattening test required for NPS above 2 required for NPS above 2
Hydrostatic test required (60 percent of yield or 2500 psi min) required

4. Dimensional Range

NPS OD (mm) Sch 40 wall (mm) Sch 40 weight (kg/m) Sch 80 wall (mm) Sch 80 weight (kg/m)

3/4 26.67 2.87 1.69 3.91 2.20

1-1/2 48.26 3.68 4.05 5.08 5.41
2 60.33 3.91 5.44 5.54 7.48
2-1/2 73.03 5.16 8.63 7.01 11.41
3 88.90 5.49 11.29 7.62 15.27
4 114.30 6.02 16.07 8.56 22.32
5 141.30 6.55 21.77 9.53 30.94
6 168.28 7.11 28.26 10.97 42.59

Threads cut to NPT or BSP reduce the effective thread length by approximately 14 to 19 mm per end (the cut thread plus a chamfer). Pipe length is usually specified as “overall length with threads and couplings” or “length without couplings, threads cut at both ends”.

5. Thread Specification Detail

NPS Threads per inch (NPT) Threads per inch (BSP) Thread length (mm)
1/2 14 14 13.5
3/4 14 14 14.0
1 11.5 11 17.5
2 11.5 11 19.0
3 8 11 25.5
4 8 11 27.0
6 8 11 27.5

NPT and BSP have different thread angles (60 vs 55 degrees) and different pitch (TPI). NPT and BSP fittings are NOT interchangeable. For export to the Middle East, BSP is the standard. For the Americas, NPT. For Asia-Pacific, both are in use depending on project history.

6. Galvanized vs Black

Black (mill finish) threaded pipe is supplied as hot rolled with the mill scale intact, lightly oiled. Black pipe is used indoors, in service trenches and above ground when paint or epoxy is the corrosion-protection choice. Hot dip galvanized threaded pipe carries a zinc coating per ASTM A90 with minimum 45 microns (1.4 oz/ft2) average for “regular” galvanized and 85 microns (2.6 oz/ft2) average for “extra heavy” galvanized.

Galvanizing is recommended for the following services:

Galvanized pipe cannot be welded in most codes because the zinc fumes are hazardous to welder health and the welds locally lose the coating. For welded galvanized systems, the alternative is to weld black pipe and then hot dip galvanize the fabricated assembly.

7. Common Applications

8. Couplings and Fittings

Threaded pipe is joined with:

Couplings are typically supplied separately, not screwed on the pipe at the mill. For ship-loose delivery, couplings are bagged in poly sacks and bundled with the pipe bundles. The order must state whether the couplings are bundled-in or separate.

9. Marking and Packaging

Each pipe length carries a stencil with:

Galvanized pipe additionally carries the zinc coating class (“A” for average 1.4 oz/ft2 or “B” for average 2.6 oz/ft2).

Pipe is bundled in 20-ft or 40-ft containers. Threads are protected by plastic thread caps screwed on each end. Internal thread protectors prevent ingress of dirt during shipping.

10. Inspection and Acceptance Tests

Each threaded pipe order must be inspected against the standard:

Third-party inspection by SGS / BV / Intertek can be added for FOB orders above 100 tonnes. Witnessed acceptance inspection typically takes 1 to 2 working days at the mill.
