S355JR H-beam is the European standard wide-flange beam for structural and constructional use. Specified by EN 10025-2 with a minimum yield strength of 355 MPa (51 ksi) at room temperature and 27 J Charpy impact at +20 °C, S355JR is the workhorse of European building codes (Eurocode 3 / EN 1993). Compared to the lower-strength S235JR, S355JR allows 30–40% lighter sections for the same load — saving steel tonnage and freight on large projects.
Product Overview
S355JR is a non-alloy structural steel defined in EN 10025-2 (“Hot rolled products of structural steels — Part 2: Technical delivery conditions for non-alloy structural steels”). The “JR” suffix indicates the Charpy V-notch impact energy of 27 J at +20 °C tested on longitudinal specimens. The grade is fully killed, fine-grained, and normalized or as-rolled.
The “H” in H-beam describes the cross-section shape (wide flange, H-shaped profile). EN standards use the designation HEA, HEB, HEM for the European wide-flange series; the S355JR material can be applied to any of these profiles plus standard IPE (I-beams) and IPN (narrow flange beams).
Standard Profile Series
- HEA (light wide flange): HEA 100 to HEA 1000. Weights from 16 kg/m to 272 kg/m.
- HEB (heavy wide flange): HEB 100 to HEB 1000. Weights from 20 kg/m to 314 kg/m.
- HEM (extra-heavy): HEM 100 to HEM 1000. Weights from 41 kg/m to 349 kg/m.
- IPE (I-beam, narrow flange): IPE 80 to IPE 600. Weights from 6 kg/m to 122 kg/m.
- IPN (standard I-beam, tapered flange): IPN 80 to IPN 600. Weights from 6 kg/m to 124 kg/m.
Custom dimensions available on request (minimum mill quantity 50–100 tonnes).

Welding and Fabrication
S355JR is readily weldable using standard arc-welding processes (SMAW, GMAW, FCAW, SAW). Preheating is normally not required for thickness up to 25 mm. Best practices:
- Use matching-strength electrodes (e.g., AWS E7018 for manual stick; GMAW wire ER70S-6).
- For thicker sections (> 40 mm), consider low-hydrogen electrodes (E7018 or equivalent).
- Preheating above 30 mm thickness: 100–150 °C if ambient temperature is below 5 °C.
- Interpass temperature below 250 °C for optimum HAZ toughness.
- PWHT not normally required for building structures; required for pressure equipment per ASME.
- Cutting: oxy-fuel, plasma, laser all workable. Cold bending with radius ≥ 3 × flange thickness.
