Equal Angle Steel Bar — Carbon Steel Supplier | Huaxia-Steel

Huaxia-Steel supplies equal angle steel bars (L-shaped sections with equal legs) in mild and structural carbon steel for framing, bracing, brackets and fabrication. We stock standard sizes from 20×20 mm to 200×200 mm in black, pickled or galvanized finish, cut to length and bundled for export. Equal angles are the most common structural section we ship, and we keep deep stock so urgent orders can load within days.
Product Overview

An equal angle is a 90° section whose two legs are the same length. It is the workhorse of structural framing — light, cheap and easy to bolt or weld. We also supply unequal angles when one leg must carry more load or bolt to a surface, and we can shear, punch or drill angles to your fabrication drawing before dispatch.

Weights above are indicative for planning; the mill test certificate gives the exact mass per metre for your heat. For tenders we recommend pricing from the actual section mass rather than the nominal table, because rolling tolerance can shift the per-metre weight by a percent or two across a large order.
Available Grades
Common grades are S235JR (EN), A36 (ASTM), Q235 (GB) and SS400 (JIS) — all weldable mild steels. For higher strength we offer S355JR angles; for corrosion life, hot-dip galvanized angles to Z275. Tell us the welding procedure and environment and we will suggest the grade that avoids preheat while meeting the load.
Manufacturing Standards
- Hot-rolled per EN 10056 / ASTM A36 / GB/T 9787.
- Straightness and leg-squareness controlled to standard.
- Sheared or saw-cut ends, chamfered on request.
- Galvanizing to EN ISO 1461 where specified.
Typical Applications
- Building and equipment framing.
- Bracing and stiffeners in steel structures.
- Shelf, rack and guard-rail members.
- Brackets, base plates and general fabrication.
Equal or Unequal Angle — Which Do I Need?
Use equal angle when both legs carry similar load or for symmetric framing; use unequal angle when one leg is bolted to a surface and the other carries the load. We stock both — tell us the load path and we will recommend the section that uses the least steel for the duty.
Quality Assurance
Mill test certificates to EN 10204 3.1 are available on request, with chemistry and tensile for the heat. Galvanized angles are checked for coating thickness (minimum 45 µm average) and continuity. We retain heat records and can arrange third-party inspection (SGS, BV, TUV) for project lots.
Packing and Shipping
Angles are bundled by size, strapped with steel bands and separated by spacers, ends protected. Bundles are labelled with grade, size and length and loaded for container or break-bulk export. For galvanized angles we separate layers with spacers so the coating is not damaged in transit, and we can shrink-wrap bundles for long outdoor storage at the port.
FAQ
Equal or unequal leg?
Equal legs for symmetric framing; unequal when one leg fixes to a surface. We stock both — tell us the load path.
Which grade should I use?
S235JR / A36 / Q235 for general work; S355JR where higher strength saves weight; galvanized for outdoor life.
Can you galvanize after cutting?
Yes — we hot-dip galvanize cut lengths to EN ISO 1461 and can drill holes before coating if required.
Cutting and Fabrication Services

Beyond stock lengths we shear, saw-cut, punch and drill equal angles to your fabrication drawing, and we can mitre the ends for clean corner joints. For bolted assemblies we drill to your hole group so the angle lands without site modification. Send the cutting list with the grade and the finish and we return ready-to-fit members rather than raw bar you must process yourself.
Tolerances and Straightness
Hot-rolled angles follow the straightness and leg-squareness limits of the relevant standard; if your fabrication needs a tighter leg angle or a shorter cut tolerance, state it and we will select or process accordingly. For visible architectural work, ask for a straightness check so the members read true once erected — a small tolerance call that improves the finished look at little cost.
Galvanizing Process
Hot-dip galvanizing to EN ISO 1461 gives a metallurgically bonded zinc coating that outlasts paint in most outdoor duties. We degrease, pickle, flux and dip, then inspect coating thickness and continuity; threads are guarded or re-cut so bolts still run. For assemblies we galvanize before drilling where possible so the holes stay clean, and we can over-size holes slightly to allow for the coating.
Bundle and Load Planning
We build bundles by size and length with spacers and steel strapping, and we tag each bundle with grade, size and heat so the site can place it without sorting. For export we can shrink-wrap galvanized bundles for outdoor port storage and lash them for container or break-bulk shipment. Tell us your crane capacity and we will keep bundle weights within it.
Enquiry Checklist
Quote inputs: section (equal or unequal), leg sizes and thickness, grade, length and quantity, finish (black, pickled or galvanized), any cutting or drilling, and the incoterm and destination. With that we return price, lead time and the certificate scope, usually within one working day.
Comparing Equal vs Unequal in Design
In a symmetric connection an equal angle is the natural choice and the cheaper one to stock; in a connection where one leg bolts to a plate and the other carries the load, the unequal angle puts material where the stress is and can be the lighter solution. Designers often default to equal legs, but checking the unequal option for loaded connections can trim weight without losing capacity.
Weld Preparation
Equal angles weld cleanly because both legs present a flat face, but the inside corner can trap flux and need backing or good access. For full-penetration work at the heel, use a suitable root preparation and watch the heat input to avoid distortion of the short leg. We can supply fitted or drilled angles so the welder is not also a cutter on site.
Corrosion Protection Comparison
Black (as-rolled) angles rely on paint or a coating system for life; pickled angles give a cleaner surface for paint; galvanized angles carry their own protection and need no site coating for decades in normal air. For outdoor or coastal structures, galvanizing is usually the lowest whole-life cost even though the first price is higher than black steel.
Typical Order Quantities
Small fabrication jobs take a few bundles; structural packages run to tens of tonnes across sizes. We hold deep stock of the common sizes so most orders load within days, and for repeat frames we keep your profile and length mix on file for fast re-order. Tell us the project tonnage and we will quote stock and mill-rolled options side by side.
Stock and Lead-Time Tips
For urgent jobs, buy from our stock sizes and avoid made-to-order lengths that add weeks; for planned projects, release the order early so the mill slots the rolling and you avoid a premium for express. A short call about your programme lets us propose the split between stock and rolled that keeps both cost and schedule under control.
Angle in Structural Design
In design, an equal angle is usually treated with one leg effective for axial load because the connection on the other leg is not fully developed; the engineer applies a shear lag factor accordingly. For bolted joints, stagger the holes to develop more of the section, and for welded joints weld both legs where the connection demands it. We can supply the angle cut and drilled to match the designed connection.
Surface Finish Options
Choose the finish by the environment: black as-rolled for indoor or painted use, pickled for a clean paint base, and hot-dip galvanized for outdoor or coastal exposure without site coating. Galvanizing adds a little weight and a thicker section dimension, so allow for it in the connection detail. Tell us where the angle will live and we will recommend the finish that reaches the design life at the lowest whole-life cost.
Cost Drivers for Angles
Price follows grade, finish and the length mix: galvanizing and cutting add to the black-bar base, and very short bespoke lengths cost more per metre than standard stock. Understanding these drivers lets you trade finish and cutting against budget without weakening the section.
For small jobs, buying standard lengths and cutting on site is often cheaper than paying for bespoke cuts; for large frames, mill-rolled standard sizes beat short special lengths on both price and lead time. Tell us the quantities and we will show the cheaper route.
The lowest whole-life cost usually comes from picking the right grade and finish for the environment, then buying the standard size that needs the least extra work. That combination beats chasing the cheapest black bar that later needs site coating and cutting at a premium.
