What is Carbon Steel Coil?
Carbon steel coils are flat-rolled steel products wound into coils, available in both hot-rolled (HR) and cold-rolled (CR) variants. They serve as the primary raw material for downstream processing including cutting, stamping, bending, welding, and pipe/tube manufacturing. Huaxia Steel supplies carbon steel coils conforming to ASTM, JIS, EN, and GB standards, serving construction, automotive, shipbuilding, and appliance industries worldwide.
Need Carbon Steel Coils for Your Project?

Manufacturing Process
Carbon steel coils are produced through two primary rolling processes:
Hot Rolling (HR): Slabs are heated above their recrystallization temperature (typically 1100–1250°C) and passed through a series of rollers to reduce thickness. Hot-rolled coils feature a dark oxide scale surface (blue-grey finish) and are suitable for structural, piping, and general fabrication applications where surface finish is secondary.
Cold Rolling (CR): Hot-rolled pickled coils are further reduced at room temperature through precision rollers to achieve tighter thickness tolerances (as low as ±0.02mm), improved surface finish (bright, scale-free), and enhanced mechanical properties. Cold-rolled coils are ideal for automotive body panels, appliance shells, and precision stamping.
Surface Finish & Treatment Options
Available surface finishes and treatments:
– Hot Rolled, Pickled & Oiled (HRPO): Black oxide removed by acid pickling, coated with light oil to prevent rust
– Cold Rolled, Bright: Smooth, scale-free surface for exposed applications
– Galvanized (GI/GA): Zinc-coated for enhanced corrosion resistance
– Pre-painted/Coated: Color-coated steel coil for building panels
– Skin-passed: Light cold reduction for improved flatness and surface quality
Common Applications

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between hot rolled and cold rolled steel coil?
Hot rolled coils are processed at high temperatures (above recrystallization point), resulting in a scaled surface, wider thickness range (1.5–25mm), and lower cost. Cold rolled coils are processed at room temperature from pickled hot-rolled material, delivering tighter tolerances (±0.02mm), superior surface finish, and higher strength. Choose HR for structural/fabrication uses and CR for precision stamping and exposed-surface applications.
What is the standard coil inner diameter (ID)?
The most common coil inner diameters are 508mm (20 inches) and 610mm (24 inches). 508mm ID is the industry standard for most international trade. Custom ID sizes are available upon request, typically at a minimum order quantity.
Can you slit carbon steel coils to custom widths?
Yes. Huaxia Steel offers precision coil slitting services. We can slit coils to widths as narrow as 10mm with tolerance of ±0.5mm. Our slitting lines handle both hot-rolled and cold-rolled coils up to 2000mm original width. Custom slit widths reduce your material waste and machining costs.
What certifications do your carbon steel coils carry?
All coils are supplied with Mill Test Certificates (MTC/EN 10204 3.1) showing chemical composition and mechanical properties. We are ISO 9001:2015 certified. Third-party inspection from SGS, BV, or TUV is available upon request.
What is the minimum order quantity?
Our standard MOQ is 5 tons for stock items and 10 tons for production orders. For trial or sample orders, we can accommodate smaller quantities—contact us for details.
How do you pack steel coils for export shipping?
Standard export packing: coils wrapped with waterproof paper and steel straps, placed on wooden pallets or steel frames. Sea-worthy packing with desiccants ensures safe delivery for ocean freight.
