What is Carbon Steel Channel?

Carbon steel channels are C-shaped or U-shaped structural steel profiles with two flanges and a web connecting them. They provide excellent strength-to-weight ratio for structural support, bracing, and load-bearing applications. Huaxia Steel supplies a comprehensive range of carbon steel channels including Chinese standard channels (GB/T 706), European UPN channels (EN 10279), and American C-channels (ASTM A6), in hot-rolled and galvanized finishes for construction, machinery, and infrastructure projects.

Need Carbon Steel Channels for Your Project?

We offer C-channel, U-channel, and UPN profiles in all standard sizes with galvanized finish options.

Manufacturing Process

Carbon steel channels are produced through hot rolling:

Billet Heating: Steel billets are heated to 1100–1250°C for uniform plasticity.

Universal Mill Rolling: The billet passes through a roughing mill and then a universal mill with horizontal and vertical rolls that simultaneously shape the web and flanges, forming the C/U cross-section. Precision pass design ensures accurate dimensions and tight tolerances.

Cooling & Cutting: Channels are air-cooled on cooling beds to room temperature, then cut to standard lengths by hot or cold shearing.

Straightening (Optional): Roller straighteners correct any warping or twisting that occurs during cooling, achieving straightness within 2mm per meter.

Surface Finish & Treatment Options

Available surface treatments:
Hot Rolled (Black): Standard mill finish with oxide scale
Hot-Dip Galvanized (HDG): Zinc coating for corrosion resistance (40–100 µm)
Painted: Anti-corrosion primer or topcoat per specification
Sandblasted & Primed: Surface preparation for on-site welding
Cold Formed (Lightweight): Roll-formed from sheet for lighter-duty applications

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between C-channel and U-channel?

C-channel and U-channel refer to the same cross-sectional shape—a vertical web with two horizontal flanges. In North American practice, they are called ‘C-channels’ (ASTM A6). In European practice, they are called ‘U-channels’ or ‘UPN’ (EN 10279). In Chinese standards (GB/T 706), they are simply called ‘channel steel’. The shapes are functionally identical.

What does ‘5#’ channel steel mean?

In the Chinese GB/T 706 standard, channel sizes are designated by number. ‘5#’ (or No.5) refers to a channel with a nominal depth of 50mm. Similarly, ’10#’ is 100mm depth, ’20#’ is 200mm, and ’40#’ is 400mm. This numbering system is unique to Chinese standards.

What is the standard length of channel steel?

Standard lengths are 6 meters, 9 meters, and 12 meters. American standard C-channels are also available in 20-foot (6.1m) and 40-foot (12.2m) lengths. Custom lengths can be cut to your requirements.

How do I calculate the weight of a channel?

Weight per meter = [h × t × 2 + (b – t) × t] × 0.00785 kg/mm, where h = depth, b = flange width, t = web thickness (all in mm). For standard sizes, refer to the GB/T 706 or EN 10279 specification tables for exact weights.
