Manufacturing Process
Wire rod manufacturing follows a carefully controlled hot-rolling process:
Billet Preparation: High-quality continuously cast billets are inspected for surface quality and chemical composition before reheating.
Heating: Billets heated to 1050–1150°C in a walking-beam furnace for uniform through-thickness temperature.
Rolling: The billet passes through roughing, intermediate, and finishing mills in sequence, reducing from ~130mm square to the target diameter (5.5–30mm). Controlled cooling (Stelmor or air cooling) follows to achieve the desired microstructure and mechanical properties.
Coiling & Inspection: Finished rod is coiled using a laying head, then inspected for diameter tolerance, surface defects, and mechanical properties. Each coil is tagged with grade, heat number, and weight for full traceability.
Surface Finish & Treatment Options
Surface quality and treatments:
– As-rolled: Natural oxide surface, suitable for wire drawing and nail making
– Peeled/Centerless Ground: Improved surface finish for demanding applications
– Pickled & Coated: Acid-pickled and phosphate/borax coated for superior wire drawing
– Spheroidize Annealed: Heat-treated for improved cold-forming in fastener applications
Common Applications
- Wire drawing: nails, screws, rivets, bolts, and general-purpose wire
- Wire mesh and chain-link fencing for construction and agriculture
- Welding wire and electrodes (MIG, TIG, SAW welding consumables)
- Rebar (plain round) for concrete reinforcement
- Spring wire for mechanical springs and mattress coils
- PC wire and prestressed concrete strand (high-carbon grades)
- Baling wire and binding wire for packaging
- Wire rope, cable, and cord manufacturing

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between wire rod and round bar?
Wire rod is hot-rolled and coiled (5.5–30mm, 1–3 tons per coil), used as raw material for wire drawing or further processing. Round bar is hot-rolled in straight lengths (10–500mm, 3–12m), used directly in machining, forging, and structural applications.
Can carbon steel wire rod be galvanized?
Yes. Wire rod is commonly galvanized after drawing to final wire diameter. Hot-dip galvanizing (HDG) and electro-galvanizing (EG) are both widely applied to wire products made from carbon steel wire rod.
What does SAE 1008 mean?
SAE 1008 is a low-carbon steel grade defined by the Society of Automotive Engineers. The ’10’ indicates plain carbon steel, and ’08’ specifies nominal 0.08% carbon (range: ≤0.10%). It is popular for wire drawing due to excellent formability.
What is the maximum coil weight?
Standard coil weights range from 1 to 3 tons depending on diameter. Larger diameters (above 16mm) can reach 3–5 tons. Custom weights available upon request.
