Hot-rolled skelp (strip) is heated in a gas-fired furnace to welding temperature (~1,300 degrees C), then pulled through a series of welding rolls that forge the edges together without filler metal. There is no filler; the bond is a forge weld. After welding, the pipe is sized, cooled, and cut. The continuous nature gives it the colloquial name “continuous weld” (CW) pipe.

4.1 Process

Cold-rolled steel strip is formed into a cylindrical shape by a series of rolls. The edges are heated by an electric resistance process (either high-frequency induction or direct contact) to ~1,400 degrees C, then forged together under pressure. The internal flash (weld bead) is removed by a cutting tool, leaving the interior surface flush. Finally, the pipe is normalized or heat-treated to refine the weld zone microstructure.

5.1 Process

A solid billet is heated to ~1,200 degrees C in a rotary piercer (Mannesmann process), which creates a hollow shell. The shell is then elongated over a mandrel mill, sized, and heat-treated. There is no longitudinal weld seam. Common variants include hot-finished seamless and cold-drawn seamless for tighter tolerances.

Seamless (Type S) and ERW (Type E) share the same schedule-based pressure rating when both are Grade B. Type F (Grade A) is limited to lower pressures because of the lower yield strength and furnace-weld history.

10. Zinc Coating (Galvanizing)

ASTM A53 Type F, E, and S are all available in black (no coating) or hot-dip galvanized (zinc-coated) finish. The galvanizing process adds 200-500 g/m² of zinc depending on section. Galvanized A53 pipe is widely used in plumbing, water supply, and outdoor structures.

For potable water systems, additional NSF/ANSI 61 or WRAS approvals may be required on top of the A53 standard.

Q1: What is the difference between A53 Type F and A53 Type E?

Type F is furnace-butt-welded (continuous weld) and produced only as Grade A. Type E is electric-resistance-welded (ERW) and is available as Grade A or B. Type E has a more reliable, normalized weld zone and accepts higher pressure and temperature service.

Q2: Can I substitute A53 Type S for A106 Gr.B?

For low- and medium-temperature service, yes – both have similar mechanical properties. For high-temperature service per ASME B31.1, A106 Gr.B is required because A53 Type S has limits on temperature above ~400 degrees C.

Q3: Is Type F still made?
