A285 Pressure Vessel Plate Carbon Steel — Factory Direct Supplier | Huaxia-Steel
ASTM A285 is a carbon steel plate specification for fusion-welded pressure vessels and boilers operating at moderate pressures and temperatures. It is widely used for storage tanks, low-pressure vessels, and boiler components where cost-effective weldability is more important than high strength. Huaxia-Steel supplies A285 Gr A, Gr B, and Gr C plates in as-rolled and normalized conditions, with full certification and optional supplementary testing for ASME code projects.
Product Overview
Our A285 pressure vessel plate is produced from killed, fine-grain practice steel and rolled on modern plate mills. Plates are leveled, edge-milled or sheared, and marked with heat number, plate number, grade, and specification. We stock common gauges and can produce non-standard thicknesses and widths to mill order. All shipments include EN 10204 3.1 mill certificates; 3.2 certificates and third-party inspection are available on request.

Mechanical Properties by Grade
| Property | A285 Gr A | A285 Gr B | A285 Gr C |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tensile strength | 45–60 ksi (310–415 MPa) | 50–65 ksi (345–450 MPa) | 55–75 ksi (380–515 MPa) |
| Yield strength, min | 24 ksi (165 MPa) | 27 ksi (185 MPa) | 30 ksi (205 MPa) |
| Elongation in 8 in., min | 27% | 25% | 23% |
| Elongation in 2 in., min | 30% | 28% | 27% |
Gr C is the most commonly exported grade because it offers the best strength while retaining excellent ductility and weldability. Gr A and Gr B are available for legacy designs or when lower strength is acceptable for cost savings. All grades are intended for moderate- and lower-temperature pressure service where notch toughness is not the primary design driver.
Chemical Composition
| Element | Max % (all grades) |
|---|---|
| Carbon | 0.17–0.28 depending on grade and thickness |
| Manganese | 0.90 |
| Phosphorus | 0.025 |
| Sulfur | 0.025 |
| Silicon | 0.15–0.40 |
The low phosphorus and sulfur limits keep the steel weldable and reduce the risk of lamellar tearing in restrained joints. Carbon content is controlled by grade and thickness to balance strength and weldability. For improved low-temperature toughness or code-specific requirements, consider normalized A285 or upgrade to A516 Gr 70.
Manufacturing Standards and Testing
Plates are produced to ASTM A285/ASME SA-285 with heat analysis, product analysis, tensile testing, and marking per ASTM A20. Supplementary requirements can be added for ultrasonic testing (S1), Charpy impact testing (S5), normalized rolling, and through-thickness tension (S3). All testing is performed by the mill and reported on the material test certificate.
Applications
Packaging and Shipping
A285 plates are loaded flat or stacked in bundles, separated by wooden or steel separators. Edges are protected against impact, and surfaces are oiled or primed to prevent rust during ocean transit. We offer standard export packing with steel straps, waterproof paper, and corner protection. Shipping terms can be FOB Chinese main port, CFR, CIF, or DAP to your warehouse.
