ASTM A516 Carbon Steel Plate — Factory Direct Supplier | Huaxia-Steel
ASTM A516 carbon steel plate is the industry-standard material for pressure vessels, boilers, and storage tanks operating at moderate and low temperatures. Huaxia-Steel supplies A516 in all four grades (55, 60, 65, 70) from 6mm to 200mm thickness, with normalized condition for thick plates and full mill test certificates including mandatory Charpy impact values.

Product Overview
A516 plate is produced in four strength grades to match different design pressure requirements. Grade 70 (485-620 MPa tensile) is the most widely specified, accounting for over 80% of total A516 production. All grades are designed for weldability and impact toughness at sub-zero temperatures — the two properties that distinguish A516 from general structural steel (A36).

Manufacturing Standards
- ASTM A516/A515: Standard Specification for Pressure Vessel Plates, Carbon Steel, for Moderate- and Lower-Temperature Service — A516 is the killed-steel (silicon-deoxidized) version; A515 is the semi-killed version (less common)
- ASME SA-516: ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code adoption of A516 — the governing standard for pressure vessel design
- EN 10028-2: European equivalent: P265GH (≈ Gr 55), P295GH (≈ Gr 60), P355GH (≈ Gr 70)
- GB 713: Chinese equivalent: Q245R (≈ Gr 60), Q345R (≈ Gr 70)
Applications
- Pressure vessels: ASME Section VIII Division 1 & 2 coded vessels for oil/gas, chemical, petrochemical processing
- Boilers & steam drums: Power generation boiler shells, superheater headers, economizer tubesheets
- Storage tanks: Atmospheric and low-temperature storage for LNG, LPG, ammonia, refrigerants
- Heat exchangers: Tubesheets, channel heads, shell plates for shell-and-tube exchangers
- Process reactors: Coded pressure-bearing shells for chemical and petrochemical reactors
- Flanges & nozzles: Pressure vessel attachment components requiring impact-tested material
Quality Assurance
Every A516 plate from Huaxia-Steel includes:
- Mill Test Certificate (MTC) per EN 10204 3.1 — full chemical composition, mechanical properties, heat traceability
- Charpy impact test results at specified temperature (mandatory per ASTM A516 Section 9)
- Normalized condition verification for plates ≥ 38mm (or per client specification)
- Dimensional inspection: Thickness, width, length, flatness per ASTM A6 tolerances
- Third-party inspection: SGS, BV, TUV, Lloyd’s, or client-designated inspector
- ASME material data report: Available for ASME-coded vessel fabrication

Packaging & Shipping
A516 plates are stacked on wooden dunnage with steel strapping at 1.5-2m intervals. Corner protectors prevent band marking. VCI paper wrap available for ocean transit protection. Container loading: 20′ GP for heavy plates (up to 28 tons), 40′ HC for thinner plate orders. FOB and CIF arrangements available.
