Carbon Steel Reducing Tee — Factory Direct Supplier | Huaxia-Steel
A carbon steel reducing tee is a three-way pipe fitting that combines two different branch sizes in one forged or welded component. Unlike an equal tee where all three openings share the same nominal diameter, a reducing tee has a run (straight-through passage) and a branch of smaller diameter. This geometry allows engineers to tap into a main pipeline without installing a separate reducer, saving weld joints, reducing pressure drop and improving flow distribution.
Huaxia-Steel supplies seamless and welded carbon steel reducing tees to ASME B16.9, manufactured from ASTM A234 WPB/WPC, A420 WPL6 and A860 WPHY 52/60/65 fittings-grade materials. Our reducing tees are formed by hot extrusion, cold drawing or welded fabrication depending on size, wall thickness and material grade. Every tee is heat-treated, dimensionally inspected and hardness-tested before release.

Product Overview
Reducing tees are classified by manufacturing method and end preparation:
- Seamless reducing tee: Formed by hot extrusion or hydraulic bulging from seamless pipe billet. Available in sizes up to 24" run with 1/2"–12" branch. Preferred for high-pressure and cyclic-fatigue service because there are no weld seams in the crotch region.
- Welded reducing tee: Fabricated from two or three pipe sections joined by circumferential and crotch welds. Economical for large diameters (above 24") and heavy walls (above SCH 80) where seamless billets are not available.
- End types: Butt-weld (BW) to ASME B16.25 bevel; socket-weld (SW) to ASME B16.11; threaded (NPT/BSPT) to ASME B1.20.1
Huaxia-Steel produces reducing tees with centre-to-end dimensions conforming to ASME B16.9 Tables II-3 and II-4. For non-standard run/branch combinations or offset branch geometries, we offer custom fabrication from approved weld procedures (WPS/PQR) with full radiographic inspection.
Specifications and Dimensions
| Parameter | Specification |
|---|---|
| Standard | ASME B16.9, MSS SP-75 |
| Size range (run × branch) | 1/2"×1/4" to 48"×36" (larger custom) |
| Schedule / wall | SCH 10 – SCH XXS, STD, XS, 160 |
| End preparation | Bevelled 37.5°±2.5° with 1.6 mm land per B16.25 |
| Surface finish | Black, pickled, shot-blasted, hot-dip galvanized |
| Tolerance | OD ±1 %; wall ±12.5 %; centre-to-end ±3 mm |
Standard reducing tee combinations follow the ASME B16.9 reduction table. Common pairings include 6"×4", 8"×6", 10"×8", 12"×10" and 16"×12". For combinations not listed in B16.9, Huaxia-Steel engineers calculate reinforcement pad requirements and crotch radius per ASME B31.3 to ensure code-compliant pressure containment.

Material Grades and Selection Guide
| Grade | Standard | Service Temp. | Application |
|---|---|---|---|
| ASTM A234 WPB | ASME B16.9 | −29°C to 425°C | General process piping, water, steam |
| ASTM A234 WPC | ASME B16.9 | −29°C to 425°C | Higher strength for thick-wall service |
| ASTM A420 WPL6 | ASME B16.9 | −45°C to 345°C | Low-temperature cryogenic piping |
| ASTM A860 WPHY 52 | MSS SP-75 | −29°C to 260°C | API 5L X52 pipeline matching grade |
| ASTM A860 WPHY 60 | MSS SP-75 | −29°C to 260°C | API 5L X60 pipeline matching grade |
| ASTM A860 WPHY 65 | MSS SP-75 | −29°C to 260°C | API 5L X65 pipeline matching grade |
For sour service applications, specify A234 WPB with NACE MR0175 hardness limitation of 22 HRC max. Huaxia-Steel provides NACE-compliant reducing tees with controlled chemistry (CE ≤ 0.43 %) and post-weld heat treatment to guarantee HAZ hardness below the NACE threshold.
Manufacturing Process and Quality Control
- Raw material: Seamless pipe billet or welded pipe with 3.1/3.2 MTC matching the fitting grade
- Forming: Hot extrusion at 1,050°C–1,150°C for seamless tees; welded fabrication with WPS-qualified procedures for large sizes
- Heat treatment: Normalising at 880°C–920°C or stress relieving at 600°C–650°C per grade
- Bevelling: CNC pipe bevelling machine with 37.5° V-bevel and 1.6 mm land
- NDE: 100 % RT or UT on welded seams; 10 % random RT on seamless crotch regions for sizes above 8"
- Dimensional inspection: CMM on centre-to-end, branch angle, wall thickness and ovality
- Hardness test: 10 % sampling, HRC or HB on run, branch and crotch
- PMI: XRF verification of every heat before release
Applications
- Process piping branch connections in refineries and petrochemical plants
- Fire protection sprinkler system mains with smaller branch lines
- Water-treatment plant influent, effluent and recirculation headers
- HVAC chilled-water and condenser-water distribution systems
- Steam distribution headers with reduced-diameter branch take-offs
- Natural gas distribution pipelines with service-line connections
- Offshore platform process piping and utility distribution

Packaging and Shipping
Reducing tees are individually wrapped in VCI film to prevent rust during ocean transit. Bevelled ends are protected with plastic caps to prevent mechanical damage. Small sizes (below 4") are packed in wooden crates; large sizes (above 12") are secured on steel-framed skids with padded contact surfaces. Each package is marked with size, schedule, grade, heat number, quantity and handling instructions.
Standard delivery time is 3–4 weeks for A234 WPB seamless reducing tees in common sizes. Welded fabricated tees and special alloys require 5–7 weeks. Hot-dip galvanizing adds one additional week.
