Carbon Steel Threaded Coupling — Factory Direct Supplier | Huaxia-Steel

Carbon steel threaded couplings are small but critical pipe fittings used to join two threaded pipe ends in low-to-medium pressure piping systems. They are supplied in three standard configurations — full coupling, half coupling, and reducing coupling — each manufactured to ASME B16.11 or ASME B1.20.1 standards. Choosing the right configuration and pressure class at the design stage avoids leakage, galling and costly rework.

Huaxia Steel supplies factory-direct carbon steel threaded couplings in carbon steel (ASTM A105 / A105N) and low-temperature carbon steel (ASTM A350 LF2 / LF6) for general service, sour service (NACE MR0175), and low-temperature pressure piping. All couplings are supplied with EN 10204 3.1 / 3.2 mill certification and full traceability.

1. Product Overview

Threaded couplings (also called threaded pipe couplings or NPT couplings) are socket-type fittings with female NPT threads on both ends. They are used to connect two male-threaded pipes, nipples, valves, or fittings in:

Threaded couplings are widely used because they are inexpensive, easy to install without specialised equipment, and require no welding. They are best suited to non-critical, low-to-medium pressure service. For high-pressure or critical service, butt-weld or socket-weld fittings are preferred.

3. Configuration Types

TypeDescriptionTypical Use
Full couplingSame NPS thread on both endsJoining two same-size pipes
Half couplingOne female NPT socket, one weld end or bossBranch connection to header
Reducing couplingLarger on one end, smaller on otherJoining two different-size pipes
Hex couplingHex body for wrench gripTight spaces where wrench access is limited
Round couplingRound body, no wrench flatsGeneral service, less common

4. Available Grades

Carbon steel threaded couplings are supplied in the following grades:

GradeStandardTypical Service
ASTM A105 / A105NForgings, carbon steelGeneral service, −20°F to 800°F
ASTM A350 LF2Low-temp forgingsLow-temp service to −50°F
ASTM A350 LF6Low-temp forgings, higher NiLow-temp service to −60°F
ASTM A182 F11 / F22Low-alloy forgingsHigh-temperature pressure service
ASTM A182 F304 / F316Austenitic stainlessCorrosive service

For NACE MR0175 sour service, specify A105N with maximum hardness 22 HRC and SSC test report. Forged couplings are typically normalised and tempered; cast couplings are also available for lower-pressure class.

5. Pressure Rating per ASME B16.11

Pressure rating depends on the class designation, NPS and service temperature. The table below shows allowable pressure at ambient temperature:

Class1/2″ (psi)1″ (psi)2″ (psi)4″ (psi)
Class 20002000200020002000
Class 30003000300030003000
Class 60006000600060006000

Pressure ratings are derated with temperature per ASME B16.34. At 800°F, Class 3000 couplings retain approximately 50% of their room-temperature rating.

6. Manufacturing Standards and Tolerances

Carbon steel threaded couplings are manufactured per the following standards:

Length tolerance is ±1/16 inch (±1.6 mm). Thread gauge verification per ASME B1.20.1 using working and shoulder gauges. Visual inspection for cracks, laps and surface defects.

7. Applications

Carbon steel threaded couplings are used in:

Carbon steel threaded couplings installed in fire protection sprinkler system

8. Quality Assurance

Every batch of carbon steel threaded couplings from Huaxia Steel is supplied with:

9. Packaging and Shipping

Standard packaging for carbon steel threaded couplings:

Standard lead time is 7–15 days for stocked grades and 20–30 days for mill-run orders. Air freight available for urgent orders.

10. Cost and Lead Time Considerations

Carbon steel threaded coupling pricing depends on the grade, class, NPS, quantity and delivery destination. As a rule of thumb:

Standard lead time is 7–15 days for stocked sizes and grades, and 20–45 days for mill-run orders. Class 6000 couplings and unusual sizes (above NPS 2) may require 30–60 days lead time.

11. Common Installation Mistakes

Five common installation mistakes with threaded couplings to avoid:

Following these installation tips avoids the most common causes of threaded coupling leakage and joint failure.
