Carbon steel threaded couplings are small but critical pipe fittings used to join two threaded pipe ends in low-to-medium pressure piping systems. For NACE MR0175 sour service, specify A105N with maximum hardness 22 HRC and SSC test report. Forged couplings are typically normalised and tempered; cast couplings are also available for lower-pressure class.

Pressure ratings are derated with temperature per ASME B16.34. At 800°F, Class 3000 couplings retain approximately 50% of their room-temperature rating.

- Class 3000 A105 adds 10–15% over Class 2000 for heavier construction
- Class 6000 A105 adds 30–45% over Class 2000 for high-pressure service

11. Common Installation Mistakes
Five common installation mistakes with threaded couplings to avoid:
- Over-tightening — NPT threads are tapered and seal by deformation. Over-tightening cracks the fitting or stretches the pipe thread. Use hand-tight plus 2–3 turns for most joints.
- Insufficient thread engagement — hand-tight plus only 1/2 turn leaves a leaking joint. ASME B1.20.1 requires minimum engagement of 4–5 turns for proper sealing.
- Mixing NPT and BSP threads — NPT (American) and BSP (European) threads are not interchangeable. Mixing causes cross-threading or leakage.
- Skipping thread sealant — for pressure-tight service, always apply PTFE tape or pipe dope. Do not rely on dry threads alone for pressures above 250 psi.
- Using a coupling with the wrong grade — A105 is for ambient to 800°F; LF2 / LF6 is required for sub-zero service. Verify the grade matches the service temperature.
