ASTM A53 Grade B carbon steel pipe is the most widely used pipe specification in North America for low- and medium-temperature service. Covering both welded (Type E) and seamless (Type S) manufacturing, A53 Grade B delivers a reliable 240 MPa yield strength and is the default choice for plumbing, fire protection, mechanical systems, and low-pressure process lines.
Huaxia-Steel supplies ASTM A53 Grade B pipe factory direct from ISO-certified Chinese mills, with full MTC EN 10204 3.1, ASTM A53 compliance, third-party inspection on request, and global ocean shipping.
Product Overview
ASTM A53 covers nominal-sized pipe intended for mechanical and pressure applications as well as for ordinary uses in steam, water, gas, and air lines. Grade B is stronger than Grade A and accounts for approximately 80% of all A53 pipe purchases. Three manufacturing types are available — Type F (furnace butt weld), Type E (electric resistance welded), and Type S (seamless) — giving the buyer options across cost and performance.
Specifications
Standard & Grade
- Standard: ASTM A53 / A53M-20 (Standard Specification for Pipe, Steel, Black and Hot-Dipped, Zinc-Coated Welded and Seamless)
- Grade: Grade B (most commonly ordered)
- Manufacturing types: Type E (ERW), Type S (seamless), Type F (limited sizes)
- Finish: Black plain end (BE), black threaded end (TBE), hot-dip galvanized (suffix -S1)
- Equivalent grades: API 5L Grade B PSL1, ASME SA-53 Grade B (for pressure code applications)
Dimensional Range
| Parameter | Range |
|---|---|
| NPS (Nominal Pipe Size) | 1/2″ – 26″ |
| Schedule (typical) | SCH 10, SCH 20, SCH 40, SCH 80, SCH 160, XXS (limited) |
| Length | SRL (single random 3-5m), DRL (double random 6-7m), fixed length cut-to-size |
| End finish | Plain end (PE), threaded end (TBE), beveled end (BE), coupled (PIBE or TBE) |
| Coating | Black (as-formed), hot-dip galvanized, FBE coating, primer coating |
Mechanical Properties (per ASTM A53)
| Property | Grade B |
|---|---|
| Yield Strength (min) | 240 MPa (35,000 psi) |
| Tensile Strength (min) | 415 MPa (60,000 psi) |
| Elongation (min, 2 inch gauge) | varies by specimen type — refer to A53 Table 1 |
| Hydrostatic Test | Performed at 60% of yield min, or per agreement |
Chemical Composition (% max, heat analysis)
| C | Mn | P | S | Cu (Type E) ** |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0.30 | 1.20 | 0.05 | 0.045 | 0.50 * |
*Type E requires Cu ≥0.50% if not aluminum-killed; current mill practice uses aluminum-killed steel, allowing lower Cu. **For welded Type E, the heat analysis of the skelp governs; for Type S, the heat analysis of the billet.
Manufacturing Type Comparison
| Type | Method | Size Range (NPS) | Application | Typical Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Type F | Furnace butt welded (continuous weld) | 1/2″ – 4″ | Low-pressure plumbing | Lowest |
| Type E | Electric resistance welded (ERW) | 2″ – 26″ | General mechanical, fire protection, process | Medium |
| Type S | Seamless, hot-finished or cold-drawn | 1/8″ – 26″ | Higher pressure / temperature service | Highest |
For most procurement, Type E ERW is the dominant choice — it is the cost-effective welded option, manufactured to hydrostatic test pressure requirements, with weld seam normalized through induction heating to provide mechanical properties comparable to seamless. Type S seamless is specified where codes or engineering standards require seamless construction.
Common Specifications & Coatings

| Threaded | TBE | ANSI B1.20.1 NPT threads with couplings |
| Plain end | PE | Suitable for butt-welding or flanging |
| FBE-coated | Custom | Fusion bonded epoxy (3M, DuPont, or Jotun systems) per project spec |
| 3LPE coated | Custom | 3-layer polyethylene (FBE + adhesive + PE) for buried service |
