Socket Weld Flange Carbon Steel — Factory Direct Supplier | Huaxia-Steel

Socket weld flanges are a widely used pipe connection component in high-pressure, small-bore piping systems. Featuring a recessed socket (counterbore) into which the pipe is inserted before fillet welding, socket weld flanges provide strong, leak-tight connections with excellent fatigue resistance. Huaxia-Steel manufactures carbon steel socket weld flanges to international standards for petrochemical, power generation, and industrial process piping systems.

Product Overview

A socket weld flange consists of a flat circular plate with a bolt-hole pattern and a raised face or flat face sealing surface. The bore features a counterbore (socket) machined to accept the pipe OD with a small clearance. The pipe is inserted into the socket until it bottoms against the shoulder, then withdrawn approximately 1.6mm (1/16″) to create an expansion gap, and fillet welded on the outside. This design eliminates the need for internal weld preparation and makes socket weld flanges particularly efficient for shop fabrication of small-bore piping.

The socket weld design offers several advantages over threaded flanges: it is not limited by thread strength at high pressures, it eliminates the risk of thread leakage, and it does not reduce the wall thickness of the connecting pipe. Compared to weld neck flanges, socket weld flanges are simpler and more economical for sizes NPS 4 (DN 100) and below.

  • ASME B16.5: Pipe Flanges and Flanged Fittings NPS 1/2 through NPS 24 — the primary American standard. Defines dimensions, tolerances, pressure-temperature ratings, materials, marking, and testing for socket weld flanges up to NPS 24.
  • EN 1092-1: Flanges and their joints — Circular flanges for pipes, valves, fittings and accessories, PN designated. Part 1: Steel flanges. European standard equivalent, covering PN 2.5 to PN 400.
  • JIS B 2220: Steel pipe flanges — Japanese standard covering 5K to 63K pressure ratings for socket weld flanges.
  • ASME B31.1 / B31.3: Power Piping / Process Piping codes — specify the design, fabrication, and testing requirements for socket weld flange connections in service, including the mandatory 1.6mm withdrawal gap before welding.
  • ASTM A105/A105M: Standard Specification for Carbon Steel Forgings for Piping Applications — material standard for the forged carbon steel used in socket weld flanges.
  • MSS SP-44 / MSS SP-6: Steel Pipeline Flanges / Standard Finishes for Contact Faces of Pipe Flanges — supplementary standards for flange facing finish and pipeline applications.
